Shimen Reservoir additional water intake project

Shimen Reservoir additional water intake project

Construction Period:

June 30, 2006-December 23, 2009

Project Cost:

Approximately NT$ 1.219 billion

Project Scope:

Shimen Reservoir, Longtan Township, Taoyuan County

Project Description

According to the original design function of Shimen Reservoir in Longtan Township, Taoyuan County, the main purpose was for agricultural irrigation. However, as time has passed, "domestic water supply" has become the most important use of the reservoir.
In August 2004, Typhoon Aere caused high turbidity in the lower layer of the Shimen Reservoir, which exceeded the treatment capacity of the water purification plants, resulting in a disruption of domestic water supply in the Taoyuan area. To address this issue, the Water Resources Agency, Northern Region Water Resources Office, Ministry of Economic Affairs, planned and designed the construction of a "layered water intake structure" near the reservoir. This structure allows for the collection of relatively clean water from different elevation levels in the reservoir during periods of typhoons and heavy rain when large amounts of sediment enter the reservoir and cause the water to become turbid.
